Case Studies » New South Wales Cancer Council
PMA Solutions partnership with The Cancer Council NSW dates back to 1998 and now includes an association with most of The Cancer Councils education and fundraising activities, including Daffodil Day.
Daffodil Day is one of the largest fundraising campaigns run in Australia. The Cancer Council produces a range of merchandise, which is pre-ordered by supporter individuals and organisations, and sold to the public on Daffodil Day each August. Approximately $9 million is raised nationally.
The Cancer Council NSW was seeking a strategic partner to manage:
- Receipt and storage of bulk merchandise stocks from its suppliers
- Receipt of supporter orders for merchandise
- A system to process, pick, pack and despatch orders
- Reporting on all orders received, in progress and despatched
- Integration with Cancer Councils transport partner
- A process to receive returned merchandise and report on this
The key objective: To create a streamlined supply chain to deliver merchandise more effectively to supporters and minimise costs, resulting in increased monies raised.
Michael Darda was responsible for managing the Daffodil Day campaign on behalf of The Cancer Council NSW. He commented, "The previous system for managing the product logistics had limitations. We were looking for a more automated process and a scalable system capable of dealing with a growing logistics need."
The key factor that attracted The Cancer Council NSW to PMA Solutions methodology was our innovative proposal to incorporate the latest technology in data management, variable imaging, personalisation, barcoding and assembly line pick, pack and despatch.
The process that was implemented included:
- Merchandise batched on a daily basis by Cancer Council NSW
- The batch file was downloaded by PMA Solutions every day, checked and passed to our variable imaging bureau partner
- The following day, a multi-part personalised supporter kit for each order was returned to PMA Solutions distribution centre
- Each order was picked and packed via an assembly line process
- Each completed order generated a barcoded delivery label, ready for pick-up by Startrack Express
- Despatched order data was uploaded to Startrack Express each afternoon
- Unused merchandise was returned to PMA Solutions, consolidated and recorded
Through PMA Solutions on-line reporting systems, The Cancer Council NSW had access to live order information.
The result was a system that transformed the merchandise logistics process for one of the largest and most complex fundraising campaigns in Australia.
"The Cancer Council now has a system it has great confidence in that is ready for the continuing growth of Daffodil Day" said Michael Darda.
In 2006 PMA Solutions will manage this campaign for New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.
