Case Studies » Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)
With stricter regional and global rules on the origin and shipment of meat and livestock, Meat & Livestock Australia
(MLA) has undertaken the responsibility of supplying all relevant producers in Australia with the new National Vendor
Declaration and Waybill. This program was introduced in order to implement a system capable of tracing the origin of
any shipment of animals from anywhere in Australia. This is known as the Livestock Production Assurance program (LPA) and is one of the most rigorous and far-reaching agricultural identification programs in the world.
As a major project of national importance this entails providing all registered producers in Australia with the necessary information and documentation to meet all local and global guidelines.
MLA appointed PMA Solutions to provide a comprehensive fulfillment process to procure all the elements, collate into packs and distribute to the relevant primary producers. Crucial to the program is also comprehensive reporting and the secure storage of all data within a purpose built database.
The packs typically include one of four different sets of Vendor Declarations, an information manual (both printed and electronically via a CD) and a generic welcome letter giving an overview of the LPA program.
As part of the process PMA Solutions receives daily data files that have been designed and developed with MLA to
ensure integrity and efficiency. This data is used to produce an address label as well as to personalise each Waybill with the relevant producer's details. The system automatically allocates and registers all relevant codes such as the
Waybill number and the Property Identification Code. The data is also stored on a specifically configured database to ensure an accurate record of all transactions, codes and shipments are kept and are easily retrievable.
As at Nov 2007, PMA Solutions has successfully mailed over 400,000 packs with an ongoing activity level of approximately 8,000 packs mailed per month, this equates to over 7 million waybills being processed to date.
The program designed and implemented for MLA has caught the attention of other nations with similar requirements. It has even received national media coverage with the system's success showcased on ABC television's Landline program.
